Salt dough crafts – an idea
Salt dough is an excellent material for crafts with the kids! All you need is flour, salt and water, these ingredients are in any kitchen, as well it is very economical. Modeling of salt dough is very interesting for children and I hope to please you as well.
We will explain how to make salt dough and give a original idea of craft.
Salt dough recipe:
1 cup of fine salt
1 cup of flour
1 cup of water (add gradually)
Mix flour and salt in a bowl. Add about 1/2 cup of water and knead into stiff dough. You may need to add a little more water to make a batter. But be careful! If the mass is too wet, the craft will not keep the shape.
Let your child knead the dough, it’s a great exercise to develop small muscles of the hands, which are responsible for the writing.
The finished dough can be used for a variety of crafts, you can sculpt figurines or roll it out and use the molds – it is your choice and your imagination.
After making the crafts – put them in the oven and bake for about 1 hour – at temperature 100-125°C (250 F) or 0.5 hour – at 150°C (300 F). Warning: the baking time depends on the thickness of your craft, thicker it is, the longer time is required for baking.
While the craft is in the oven, prepare paints and brushes for painting. We recommend to use acrylic paints, because they are better retain their color. You can also use a regular paint, but try to take thick paint and less water, so the paint does not leak and does not mix with the dough. Sequins are also very nice, they should be put on the wet paint.
When your craft is ready, you can varnish ше, so you get additional shine and it also helps to preserve the colors longer. It is better to use clear spray-paint.
The dough can be painted with food coloring and you can let your kid to paint the top with finger paints.
These salt dough crafts I with my children made for the New Year. At first, they were hanging on our Christmas fur-tree, and then I carefully wrapped them in paper and put it away with a Christmas toys to store for a long time. I wonder whether my children will recall them in the next year?
During our creative work I was making the photos.
Unfortunately, I completely lost the photos of the preparatory phase, when I made the dough and molds, but the memories are still fresh, and I will try to describe everything in detail.
After you knead the dough, make cakes of the appropriate size. I used a saucer to get the correct circle, the edges should be carefully cut, you can use a little water, so they will be even and smooth. I have small children – one year and three years old, so I just told them to slap a palm in the center of the circle, but I had the idea to make a mold of the hand, not just the handprint, perhaps, I am going to realize it in the following year.
I decided to make our crafts brighter and paint them. First, I covered them with white paint, and then drew some Christmas things.
I have no artistic gift, so do not judge me hard! You will get, I’m sure, much better crafts!
And Santa Claus – a handprint of my son.
